Gordon County celebrated its 150th
birthday on February 3, 2000. And from looking at the records, a
lot of living has occurred since the first settlers arrived. The
lines of light verse which appear on this page are excerpts from
a poem, Across the Hills to Gordon, penned by native son Lawson
A. Fields almost a century ago. Mr. Fields saw in this region of
river bottoms and mountain crests a special quality, a promise
for today and potential for tomorrow. His thoughts encompassed
all that was good about Gordon County, and pledged his intent to
remain forever faithful to this fertile valley.
Across the
hills to Gordon, where the Oostanaula flows,
From the wild Cohutta mountains toward the sea,
Adown a hundred valleys, where the weeping-willow grows
Together with the oak and maple tree.
Across the hills to Gordon, where the Oostanaula croons,
A melody enchanting evermore
To its fringe of weeping willows and its sandy bars and dunes-
Ah “tis here I hope to sleep when life is o’er. |
